Monday was designated for Family Day. This goes to show the importance of the need to spend time with family. Our loved ones often crave to have our undivided attention. But with the business and pressures of life it has compromised our family time.
There is no specific definition set in stone for “what is spending time with family”. We all come from different walks of life and every family has different needs. What may work for my family may not necessarily work for yours. At the end of the day it all comes down to being intentional on how we make use of family time.
From my very own personal experience, having 4 children, now expecting another child and operating Twin Fish, I may not have mastered it yet, but I certainly try my very best to make time for my family. My children find such excitement In the simple things we can do together- movie night at home with microwaved popcorn, or just going to baskin Robbins or Demetre's for ice cream even in this cold weather. With my eldest it’s the enjoyment of hanging out at the mall shopping and drinking bubble tea from Chatime. Then of course I have my husband whom I need to set aside time for as well. Despite my marriage having hurdles from time to time, we still find those date nights to spark the love that has been buried away from the day to day hurt and responsibilities. Truthfully thank God for my mom that it is even possible we can have these date nights. She watches all the grandchildren for us to enjoy a night out together.
Nonetheless, nothing we do will be done in vain if we are doing it with the intention of honouring God. As the Word says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)
With this verse in mind, it will help take off the pressure and weight of doing things for the sake of it or to please those around us. Instead, it redirects our focus on God which in turn will enable us to wear evidence of Him in the way we spend time and treat our loved ones.
